As the year ends and we come to the holiday season, many of us will be traveling around or outside of Missouri. Hopefully, we’ll get a chance to reunite with loved ones we haven’t seen in some time and share the wonder of a wintery holiday together.
Missouri winters are snowy and often icy; that can make for poor driving conditions. When planning travels during the holiday season, here are a few of the things we hope you’ll look out for:
Look out for others - Beyond just watching out for bad traffic congestion, Missourians must look out for each other on the road. Extend aid when you can, and help others get where they are going safely. The more people that choose to adopt this attitude, the better the roads will be.
Keep on top of the weather - Snow usually reaches no more than 10 inches (25 cm) in the Southeast, but it can get as far as 20 inches (51 cm) in the state’s northern region. Be sure to take it seriously, especially if you head somewhere rural. If you have to drive through it, know the roads you are going on and what tires or riggings (snow chains, etc.) you will need to reach your destination safely. Know before you head out if you are driving into a potential snowstorm.
Be prepared - The best antidote to an unforeseen development is the anticipation of possible complications. Make sure you travel with an emergency kit, including first aid, road flares, a piece of carpet to get traction on, and snacks in case you get stranded. Be sure to collect all the things you need in an accident -- driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance -- and put them in an accessible place.
Regularly Scheduled Maintenance - Always look after your vehicle BEFORE you plan a long holiday trip. Winterize your car. Make sure you top up your antifreeze, as well as all your other fluids. Make sure there are anti-freezing agents in your windshield wiper fluid.
